Before the beginning
A quiet moment of presence before all beginnings.
Rooted in the traditional Aipan art of Kumaon, this work draws from a practice historically created for thresholds, rituals, and moments of transition. Traditionally painted with rice paste on red earth, Aipan marks spaces where attention pauses before movement, where beginnings are acknowledged quietly rather than announced.
In this interpretation, the palette shifts to green: the colour of growth, renewal, and continuity. It allows the form to come alive and represent potential growth rather than have ceremonial connect. Patterns unfold patiently across the surface, inviting the eye to linger, trace, and slowly recognise what lies within.
Before the Beginning is meant to be encountered gradually. It does not declare meaning at first glance, but allows presence to gather through looking. What emerges is less a symbol and more a feeling, of readiness, grounding, and the stillness that comes just before something begins.

This piece was created using hand-drawn white line work inspired by traditional Aipan patterns, developed carefully across a handmade paper. The background was built in layers to achieve depth and texture, allowing the white motifs to sit distinctly without visual harshness.
Patterns were composed freehand, with attention given to rhythm, balance, and repetition. Look carefully and you’ll recognize the form depicted here.
