From the Loft
A restoration of a 150-year-old trunk, brought back from storage to presence.
This trunk was found in a mother’s loft, where it had remained untouched for generations. Its form, scale, and quiet authority suggested a piece that had once held importance, meant to travel through lives rather than sit above them, unseen.
The owner chose to restore it not as a storage object, but as a piece of art. One that respected its antique status while allowing it to be experienced anew. The restoration focused on balance: preserving age, stabilising structure, and reimagining its surface with restraint, so the trunk could carry its history without being confined by it.
Once restored, the trunk moved from the margins of the home to its centre. No longer something to be put away, it became present again: functional, visible, and quietly elevating everyday life. From the Loft is a reminder that age is not an ending. A new life can emerge, even as old memories are gently held still.

This trunk was discovered in a mother’s loft—over 150 years old, worn by time and long removed from daily life. What first appeared as an antique soon revealed itself as something more enduring: a vessel of memory, built to last, waiting to be seen again.
The restoration began with respect for its age and original form. Rather than erase its history, the process focused on stabilising the structure, restoring its strength, and reimagining its surface with care. Since the trunk was already primered, we started with 3 coats of enamel to create a textured background, with drying time between each coat. Hand-painted motifs and traditional detailing were introduced in acrylic and 3 top coats of varnish sealed the entire artwork preserving it for years to come.
Once restored, the trunk returned to the centre of the home, no longer hidden away but present once more. This work is about return. Not to the past, but to relevance. An object shaped by generations, reclaimed not as nostalgia, but as a living presence with a place in the present.
