The Woman within the Goddess
An abstract exploration of divinity, seen through the woman it inhabits.
This work began not with certainty, but with trust. Given complete creative freedom and a desire for something that can brighten an entire room, the journey moved through doubt, resistance, and letting go. What emerged was not the first idea, nor the most elaborate one, but the truest. A Lakshmi imagined not as an icon, but as presence: inward, luminous, and deeply human.
The Woman Within the Goddess reflects divinity as something lived rather than depicted. Here, abundance is quiet, strength is softened, and symbolism reveals itself slowly, layered into form, colour, and gesture. Vishnu exists within her being, not beside her; tradition is honoured without becoming rigid. The painting does not demand reverence. It invites recognition.
This work stands as a reminder that the most meaningful creations are born through listening. Both to the space they will inhabit and to the people who will live with them.

This painting was commissioned as an abstract interpretation of Goddess Lakshmi, envisioned at a scale large enough to hold and brighten an entire room. The brief was intentionally open, allowing room for exploration rather than instruction. What followed was a prolonged process of making and unmaking, beginning with a single large work that, despite months of effort, did not feel right for the space.
To step away from that impasse, the idea was re-examined through a series of six smaller studies. These iterations were used not to refine technique, but to listen; to sense what resonated and what did not. From this process emerged a clearer direction: Lakshmi not as an external deity, but as a lived presence. The final work took shape through this understanding, grounded less in iconography and more in embodiment.
Traditional symbolism is embedded throughout the painting with intention and restraint. Vishnu is present through the Dashavatara, woven into her form rather than positioned beside her, reflecting the desire that Lakshmi not be represented in isolation. Motifs such as the lotus, kalasha, owl, elephants, and references to Ashta Lakshmi, Shaivite and Vaishnavite symbols are layered into the composition—meant to be discovered over time rather than announced. The work ultimately reflects Lakshmi as both woman and goddess, not separate identities, but one continuous presence.
