The Flying Apsara

A timeless figure in motion, reimagined through personal memory and reverence.

The Flying Apsara is among the most evocative figures painted on the walls of the Ajanta Caves, created between the 2nd century BCE and 650 CE. These paintings, made with natural pigments derived from plants and minerals, possess a remarkable sense of movement and grace.. figures that appear suspended between earth and air, time and timelessness.

Long before encountering the original murals at Ajanta, this image entered memory through an adaptation by artist Vijay Kulkarni, displayed at ITC Aurangabad. During a brief stay, the painting revealed itself repeatedly, each passing glance deepening its hold. Long after leaving the city, the image lingered, insisting on return, until reworking it became less a choice and more a necessity.

This painting is a personal adaptation, shaped by that persistent pull. In keeping with the spirit of the Ajanta murals, the figure is rendered with deep, dark skin tones, a quality born from the use of natural pigments in the originals, and one that continues to feel beautiful on canvas. The work does not attempt replication, but remembrance: an offering to a form that has travelled across centuries, now finding new presence in paint and personal history.

This painting was created as a contemporary reworking rather than a literal reproduction. The composition was developed through layered acrylic work, allowing form and movement to emerge gradually while maintaining softness and flow. Particular attention was given to line, posture, and rhythm, so the figure retains a sense of suspension rather than weight.

Colour was approached keeping the original ones in mind, using deeper skin tones and muted accents to echo the tonal depth found in the original. Layers were allowed to settle between applications to build richness without surface heaviness.
